I have been

one acquainted with the night.

I have walked out in rain ... and back in rain.

I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.

I have passed by the watchman on his beat,
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still ... and stopped the sound of feet

When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye

And further still at an unearthly height,

O luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.

I have been one acquainted with the night.

'Acquainted with the Night'
I've loved this poem since first reading it in 5th grade .
Appropriately, this post was finished at 2:45 a.m.

I have been one acquainted with the night,
but now I'd like to get re-acquainted with my bed, so...
~ Good night ~

  2. You've match the poem and the photos beautifully. I am one acquainted with the night nowadays as I am having trouble staying asleep! Thanks for visiting my blog. I appreciate your kind comments.

  3. Megan,
I should have read this before asking you in my comment, if you've slept?:)) This is ABSOLUTELY RIVETING!! One of my all-time fav's! The poem and the images are breath-taking. Thank-you.

  4. Thank you Faye ~ it's good to hear from fellow insomniacs ;) Your lovely lady inspired me to do a sketch of a woman ... I think I'll feature her this Friday :)

Janet ~ I went right to bed after completing this post... I didn't really care that it was late (early?), I wanted to finish it as I was flowing in the moment (I'm sure you've been there... just maybe not at 3 AM!) This poem is so moody ~ it was fun searching for pictures to accompany the words. I actually illustrated this poem in 5th grade too. I remember drawing a man in a trench coat and Big Ben :)

  5. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing this poem. Never knew of it until now. I can relate... I can be a night owl myself. That is typically when I'm most reflective. So glad you followed through on your determination. You matched photos so artistically to the poem!

  7. Thank you Ella ~ yes, night is really my favorite time of the day in many ways. It's when I feel most creative for sure :)

Janet ~ I sometimes work night shift at the hospital, and right around 3 is when I grab a cup of coffee or a little something to eat. I can always tell it's getting close to 3 when I start feeling hungry ;) I've noticed I can get through the day on 5 hrs of sleep also, so 3 is when I try to say lights out!

Yes, I use morguefile or take my own photos. Don't join the site though, you'll have to pay a fee (it's hidden in the fine print). You won't be able to comment on photos, but some of the photographers post their e-mail address, and you can thank them for making their work available to you that way. I love that :)
